Products THM1176 Three-axis Hall Magnetometer

THM1176 3-axis Hall Magnetometer

The only handheld 3-axis Hall magnetometer family

The THM1176 family combines the performance of a professional Hall instrument with the usability of a consumer USB device. Its range goes from the µT to 14 T, DC to 1 kHz, with ±1% accuracy. It simultaneously measures all three axes of the magnetic field, so you get a true field strength reading no matter how you hold the probe.  The entire instrument has been reduced to a cable with a few fat spots, which can plug directly into your PC or into a battery-powered handheld computer.

The result is the most compact, lightweight, low-power, go-anywhere, and measure-anything magnetometer in the world.

The THM1176 family

The family includes sensors with different measurement ranges (8 mT to 14 T), resolutions (nT to mT), and sizes (0.5x2x42 to 16.5×5.0×2.3 mm). Choose the model best suited to your application – all are low-power, portable, 1 KHz bandwidth, and fully software compatible.

• THM1176-MF for general-purpose
An outstandingly flexible and sophisticated magnetometer, the THM1176-MF features four ranges (0.1 – 3 T), precision down to 100 µT (1 Gauss), and an accuracy of ±1%. Its range is adapted for all permanent magnets, resistive electromagnets, and the most common superconducting magnets. Its single-chip 3-axis Hall sensor measures 16.5×5.0×2.3 mm, enabling 3-axis field measurements in small gaps. A microscopic 3-axis active volume provides accurate measurements even in strong gradients. Finally, spinning-current techniques minimize offset as well as the Planar Hall Effect.

• THM1176-HF for superconducting magnets
With a 20 T range, and calibrated to 14 T, the THM1176-HF is ideal for measuring the very strong magnetic fields typical of superconducting magnets. Additional ranges of 0.1, 0.5, and 3 T, with precision as good as 0.3 mT, this probe is also suitable for measuring resistive- and permanent-magnet systems. A single-chip 3-axis Hall sensor very similar to the THM1176-MF minimizes offset and Planar Hall Effect, and provides accurate point measurements in strong gradients.

• THM1176-HFC for sub-millimeter gaps
Featuring the same specifications as the THM1176-HF, but with a probe measuring only 0.5x2x42 mm, the THM1176-HFC enables 3-axis measurements where they were formerly impossible – for example between the rotor and stator of large rotating machinery. How much do you trust your computational model? Now you can measure it!

• THM1176-LF for fringe fields
With an 8 mT range, ±20 µT accuracy, ±2 µT resolution and an active volume of 6×3.4×3 mm, the THM1176-LF is ideal for measuring environmental disturbances involving weak magnetic fields, typically fringe fields.

Desktop, Handheld and Duo Kits

If you just want to plug a magnetometer into the USB port of your computer, you need the Desktop Kit. The Handheld Kit, with its optional battery-operated, industrial quality tablet computer, takes the measurement from the lab bench to the field – although of course you can still use the instrument with your computer, too. If you need the capabilities of two probes, the Duo Kit provides a practical and cost-effective package, with or without handheld computer.
All kits include a zero gauss chamber and a CD with the manual, software for Windows and Mac, and all source code. The handheld kits include a carrying case with the tablet computer, charger, adapters and cables.
The computer interface complies with the USB, USBTMC/USB488, DFU, SCPI and VISA standards, and is compatible with Windows, Macintosh and Linux based computers.

EZMag3D Software that works

The supplied software displays the total field and its x, y, z components, while a “3D Compass” permits direct visualization of the vector direction. FFT, RMS or Peak-to-Peak computations can also be displayed, both numerically and graphically.

The user has full control of all measurement parameters, such as sample rate, trigger mode and data averaging. Visual and auditory alarms can be used to signal when measurements are out of bounds. Last but not least, measurements can be recorded to a file, played back in any of the available display modes, or transferred for further analysis using, for example, Excel or Matlab.

Born to map

Its 3-axis capability, compact form factor, small active volume and simple programmability make the THM1176 the ideal magnetometers for field mapping. This applies to manual marking of the “5 Gauss line“ as well as the systematic mapping of an entire volume with a sophisticated 3-axis field-mapping jig. Last but not least, it is now – for the first time – practical to build arrays of Hall sensors, simply by plugging a series of instruments into a USB hub. The extra cost of multiple sensors is often more than offset by the reduced mechanical complexity of the jig. Other important benefits include faster scanning, better positioning precision, and better reproducibility.

Details, details, details…

Attention to detail ensures that you get accurate measurements with a minimum of fuss. Auto ranging automatically selects the range you need, and auto temperature compensation minimizes the effect of temperature fluctuations. Different trigger modes are designed to support signal averaging, AC measurements, or synchronization with external events. Results can be displayed in T, mT, µT, nT, kG, G, mG or the equivalent NMR resonant frequency – as appropriate for the particular model. The zero offset can be easily determined with the zero-gauss chamber included, and is stored in flash memory. The firmware can be upgraded by the user. Even the signal cable between the sensor and the electronics is specially designed to minimize induction effects.
